The Cross-Island Trek (a.k.a. Te Rua manga, a.k.a. The Needle) is awesome, and I definitely recommend it to any reasonably fit people visiting Rarotonga who want a little adventure.. However, with mountains to the east and west that are higher than Te Rua Manga, you don't quite get a full 360 degree view of the entire island. Nonetheless.

Jun 2021. This is a sharp but relatively quick climb up to Te Rua Manga from the North, with the final 50 metres using chains. These are well secured and shouldn't be a problem for those without fears of heights. The descent on either side is more tricky due to the slippyness of the tree roots you are clambering down.

This is a steep and adventurous hike through dense forest and slippery roots past The Needle / Te Rua Manga and continues south to visit Papua Waterfall. There is a car park in the north end on Uruau Drive as it crosses Avatiu Stream. From here follow the Cross Island Track south towards Te Rua Manga. Took a little less than 3 hours. Walk up to Needle is quite steep & over roots & rocks, taking about an hour. Gradient down was a little easier (we took the right hand side of the loop track). Orange arrows & track are easy to follow but signage at top is worn, can barely read.
