The work was led by Jean-Jacques Olier, founder of the Saint-Sulpice society, created to honor Sulpitius the Pious.The Sulpitius still meet today. Noted for its slightly mismatching towers and neat columns, the church is more than an imposing exterior.

It was originally constructed during the 13th century and mostly completed in 1732. The church has a long‐standing organ tradition which began in the 18th century.
